The department estimates that reduced emissions will reduce utility payments by $1 billion annually.
The Department of Energy released the final rules to update energy efficiency standards for residential washers and dryers. Congress mandated this update in September 2023. The department estimated that the new efficiency standards will reduce emissions by 2.5 billion metric tons in 30 years and save the average family $39 billion on energy and water bills in the same time frame.
“For decades, DOE’s appliance standards actions for clothes washers and dryers have provided loads of savings for American families while also decreasing harmful carbon emissions,” said Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. “With strong support from industry leaders and consumer advocates, DOE will continue to roll out innovative appliance solutions throughout 2024 to lower costs for the American people.”
